The New Rules For Eating Healthy

Going Green! After my recent experiments with the 4 Hour Body Diet, I am revising my rules for eating healthy.

  1. If it doesn’t look like nature intended it to, don’t eat it – Do you see Twinkie trees out there?  How about pasta bushes?  How about herds of candy bars?  No?  Then none of these things belongs in your diet.  The more processed something is, the worse it is for you.  The closer you can get something to its original form, the better.  This applies to everything.  For example, fresh fruit is better than dried fruit, steak is better than hamburger and so on.  If there’s a way to eat something that would involve less processing then do that.  (note that this means cutting out most breads, pastas, noodles, sweets, chocolates and many other foods.  If it’s processed, don’t eat it.
  2. Food racism – If it’s white, cut it out.  Rice, potatoes, white bread and anything else that’s white.
  3. Top 5 Ingredients – If the top five ingredients on the box include any sugars, corn products or chemicals you can’t identify, don’t eat it.
  4. Water only – If it’s not water, don’t drink it.  No, I don’t care how many studies come out showing wine is good for you or coffee cures cancer, I can also show you some lovely studies that show cigarette smoking makes you thin.  Stop drinking anything other than water.
  5. Never eat alone – If you can’t find someone to eat with you then don’t eat.  It’s ok, your body can take a few hours with out food.  Eating with someone will prevent you from binging and help you eat slower.  If you find yourself really hungry then you need more friends.
  6. Only eat when hungry – It doesn’t matter if your friends want to go eat, are you hungry?  If not, don’t eat.  Go with them and have a water if you must, but don’t eat to be social, to avoid projects or for any other reason other than being hungry.  Yes, this is completely counter the Tim Ferriss idea that you must eat proteins in the morning.  I say that’s wrong.  If you’re hungry, eat.  Otherwise, do something more productive with your morning, like working out.
  7. The golden rule – On Saturday, all rules can be broken.

That’s it.  7 simple rules for eating healthy.

More Charts! This Time, Workout and Weight By Age

Last week I charted by weight by age and came up with some interesting thoughts on what really influences health.  Based on that conversation, I thought I would add in additional information in the form of my workout results.

I am representing average workout performance in two ways.  First by showing you how far I would run in an hour.  That’s the bar marked speed and the lowest point on it is 4 while the highest is 6.5 miles.  The second is by showing average weight in my bench press set.  That’s the blue bar with the lowest being 45 and the highest being 275.

Eating With A Conscience While On The 4 Hour Body Diet

This entry is part 12 of 15 in the series 4 Hour Body Diet

Cows GrazingThose of you who’ve read my blog for a long time know that I prefer to eat with a conscience. That is, I like eating food that is good for me and also good for the environment. Plus I love animals so I don’t want to eat something that is needlessly cruel to raise and produce. In fact, this is the reason I originally became a vegetarian, because I wanted to lessen my impact on the world around me. However, as the years went by, I found myself modifying my stance somewhat, which brings us to today’s story. [Read more...]

A Story In One Meal: Tim Ferriss 4 Hour Body Diet Vs. Healthy Eating

This entry is part 11 of 15 in the series 4 Hour Body Diet

I was making dinner the other night when it finally hit me, I knew EXACTLY what the difference was between eating healthy and the Tim Ferriss 4 Hour Body diet.  However, before I let you in on that little secret, I need to fill you in on a bit of background.

My amazingly super awesome fiancé and I moved in together in January, right around the time when I was finishing up my first experiment with the 4 hour body diet, and we’ve been making an effort to cook more meals at home, something we’ve found to be fun and healthy.  Back then, one of my favorite meals to make was a a few shredded pieces of chicken breast, tossed in a pan with a few pieces of chicken sausage and then stir fried with cajun seasoning.  I would then add a bit of fresh greens and maybe some sliced up tomatoes and serve it up hot from the pan!  Yummy! 4 Hour Body Diet vs. Eating Healthy. Winner Takes All. ROUND ONE!!

This entry is part 9 of 15 in the series 4 Hour Body Diet

I mentioned last week that I was going to experiment with healthy eating versus the Tim Ferriss diet but I think I forgot to clarify what exactly that meant.  Sooo….

Is The 4 Hour Body Healthy

First things first, I don’t believe the 4 hour body eating plan is unhealthy. I think it’s very restrictive but not unhealthy. It basically eliminates all junk from your diet for most of the week and that’s a great thing right there. It will end up with a very high percentage of calories from protein and fat but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, with the exception of the junk you eat on your cheat day, I think the 4 hour body diet is quite healthy. [Read more...]

Stupid Experiments – Tim Ferriss 4 Hour Body Diet Vs. Eating Healthy

This entry is part 8 of 15 in the series 4 Hour Body Diet

DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!  I am a completely untrained amateur and even I think this was a bad idea, but hey, all in the interest of science! :)

Since about the beginning of this year, I’ve been trying out a new diet called the The 4-Hour Body.  You can find more details about it in these posts but to summarize, the 4 hour body diet emphasizes an almost complete elimination of carbs (Tim Ferris, the diet’s originator, calls it the “slow carb” diet), even fruits are not allowed, and a very high emphasis on proteins.  It also includes a very interesting item called the cheat day, a single day a week during which you can eat anything you want.  I saw some great results on this diet, about 3lbs lost on average per week.
